UPCOMING EVENT: The Studio of Piano Fine Arts “Family & Friends Duet Recital”

The Studio of Piano Fine Arts will host its 17th annual “Family & Friends Duet Recital” on Saturday, February 17 at the SKCTCS Auditorium on the Harlan Campus. Over 60 young musicians will perform in one or more of three recitals: 2:00, 4:30 and 7:00 pm. Each student will perform on their instrument with a special friend, family member or their teacher. Instruments include piano, violin, guitar and harp. Featured teachers will be Lisa Trapp, Justin Taylor, Pat McClung and Clara Atkins-Pope. Performing apprenticed teachers will be Jaid Ragg and Victoria Smith. Guest musicians will feature Greg Hollins on mandolin, Forrest Hollins on guitar bass, and Jack McClung on Banjo. A special bluegrass band performance will be presented by Studio violinists/fiddlers at the 4:30 recital. Other special performances will include a string quartet, two Mozart piano concertos, and a Jazz Guitar combo. The public is invited to attend. A $5.00 admission for adults will be charged. PATTERNS IN NATURE

Kristen Zink

I've always had an appreciation for nature, which is where most of my inspiration comes from. In my work I'm mainly concerned with the patterns found in nature, whether it be the veins in a piece of fruit or the branches of a tree. I've zoomed in, distorted, and simplified to capture exciting patterns. By altering these objects they tend to become abstract or surreal. I enjoy experimenting with and combining a variety of 2-dimensional media. In my most recent works I've started to combine stark blacks and whites with radiant colors, I really enjoy the contrast, along with the positive and negatives spaces it ceates.

Artists' Attic Welcomed back the Summer Arts Camp girls in 2006. The kids spent their week with the girls creating a musical performance, complete with original choreography and their very own sets.

CHOIR CAMP
June 26th – 30th, 2006

9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. daily @ Artists’ Attic
(3rd Floor - Old Harlan County Courthouse)

For children entering Grades 4 – 8

Camp sessions will focus on many aspects of vocal music, including:

٭Fundamentals of Singing ٭Rhythm Studies
٭Vocal Exercises and Warm-Ups ٭Music Reading Skills
٭Vocal Tone Enhancement ٭Terminology in Choral Music

On Friday, June 30th at 12:00 p.m., campers will present a 30-40 minute concert of patriotic music. The public is invited to attend this program, which will be held in the former Circuit Courtroom on the 3rd floor of the Harlan County Courthouse.

Instructor: Ms. Lisa Abraham Trapp

Camp fee is $45 per child, and includes all materials. Deadline for registration is June 20th. Space is limited. For additional information, contact Lisa Trapp at 573-1322.

Following in the footsteps of both Letcher Count's "Cowan Creek Music School" and Southwest Virginia's "Mountain Empire Community College Mountain Music School",
Artists' Attic is planning the first
Harlan County Mountain Music School!

The school will focus on traditional old-time music and will feature beginner classes in guitar, fiddle, dulcimer, old-time singing and, for players with some experience, string band. Our musical director is Ron Short from Big Stone Gap, VA. Ron is a talented musician, songwriter, performer and teacher, who has been instrumental in starting both the Cowan Creek Mountain Music School in Whitesburg and the Mountain Empire Community College Mountain Music School in Va. Our own Ann Schertz will be teaching the dulcimer class. This will be a fun, informal school taught in the old traditional method of passing on music by ear, by showing and listening.

Students: Ages 10 to 18 Classes are FREE !
Adults: Classes cost only $25

Friday, June 2nd
3:00 to 6:00 Our school will open with a brief concert by the instructors, followed by classes. After class, we hope you will visit the festival food vendors and catch the BONEPONY concert (7:00 to 9:00) on the main stage ! These guys are great musicians in a category all their own; think Led Zepplin meets bluegrass; they will have you dancing, clapping and singing along !

Saturday, June 3rd

12:00 to 1:00 Lunch Break (you're on your own to hit the festival food vendors)

1:00 to 3:30 Classes

4:00 Finale Concert! Parents, families and the public are invited to join us in the old courtroom for performances by the students and instructors...and maybe some sing-along!

Some loaner instruments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Classes are limited to children age 10 and up, due to length of class time and size. Class size is limited, so sign up ASAP!

"Consider It All Joy"
a community photography exhibit

Consider It All Joy was a facet of the SEKCTC PACT project, where Harlan County locals, ages 2 through 92 were given cameras and asked to capture the essence of their community. With the help of the photography students of UNC and over 100 community curators, 60-some photographs where chosen to represent What Is Harlan County. The exhibit has been over the mountains, but is now back in Harlan for it's own to enjoy.
Consider It All Joy will Hang through May at Artists' Attic, 3rd floor of the Old Harlan Court House.

Charlotte Nolan, charter member of the Artists' Attic, was honor by the Barter Theatre on Sunday, April 23rd. Inducted into the Walk of Fame, Miss Nolan was recognised as 'an Actress, Patron and Lifelong Advocate" of Virginia's National Theatre.

Harlan County Mountain Music School!

The school will be held at the old Courthouse in downtown Harlan during the Poke Sallet Festival on Friday evening, June 2nd and Saturday, 3rd. Pending interest, we hope to offer classes in dulcimer, guitar, string band (for experienced musicians), old-time singing, fiddle and square-dancing. The Mountain Music School will enroll children and adults, ages 10-adult. Tuition is $50. Some loaner instruments and youth scholarships may be available. Free Gospel Concert

Artists' Attic will play host to a Free Gospel Concert featuring

In Harmony

Thursday June 16th at 7pm

The youth choir of the Wesleyan United Methodist Church,have traveled from Springfield, MO to share their voices with us.

The concert will be held in the Old Courtroom, part of the Artists' Attic new location, on the 3rd floor of the Harlan Courthouse.

The choir will also be singing June 17th at Beech Fork Community Center, and June 18th at SKCTC Godbey Appalachian Center Theatre, South East Community College.

The concerts are free to the public. A love offering will be taken to benefit HOPE Mission Ministries. These concerts were made possible through cooperation of HOPE Missions Ministries, ArtistsÂ Attic, Southeast Community and Technical College, and the Beech Fork Community Center

Fourth time is charm for the Artists’ Attic. It’s first three locations were temporary; it’s present location is unique and permanent. Thanks to Harlan County Judge-Executive Joe Grieshop and the Harlan County Fiscal Court, the Artists’ Attic now calls the third floor of the old courthouse home. (It’s the space formerly occupied by Circuit Court Clerk Paul Williams.)...

Appalachian Arts Project - Summer Arts Day-Camp 2005

The Artists' Attic will be playing host to the Appalachian Arts Project - Summer Arts Day-Camp 2005 organised by Laura Vilines.

The Camp will encompass Music, Dance, Drama, and Art, with a small musical performed for family and friends at the conclusion of each session.

Session One - July 11-15
For Students 6-9 years old

Session Two - July 18-22
For Students 9-12 years old

Session Three - July 25-29
For Students 6-9 years old

Camp sessions will be held from 9 am through 1pm each day.

To sign your child up for Camp, please collect a registration form from the Artists' Attic (The Courthhouse, Harlan) , The Boys and Girls Club (Central St, Harlan) or the Bryan W. Whitfield Jr. Library (3rd St, Harlan) and mail to Laura Vilines.
